ALUMNI, VOLUNTEERS HELP KEEP EYH TRADITION ALIVE
Oct. 27 Math/Science Event at MTSU Brings 350 Girls to Campus

(MURFREESBORO) — MTSU seniors Sharese Richardson and Mallory Faulkner and freshmen Ashley Martin and Jennifer Ilsley volunteer their time for Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science because they know middle- and high-school girls potentially can make their mark and have careers in these fields.
“It lets girls know they are capable of doing things in math and science,” said Richardson, an interdisciplinary studies major that plans to teach after graduating in May 2008.

Junior high girls to discover math, science and engineering at UMR

Friday, October 26th, 2007

On Friday, Nov. 4, more than 560 seventh- and eighth-grade girls will travel to the University of Missouri-Rolla campus to learn how fun science, mathematics, engineering and technology can be.

Girls who attend “Expanding Your Horizons,” a one-day conference to be held at UMR Friday, Nov. 4, will interact with women working in traditionally male occupations, participate in hands-on workshops, meet other young women with similar interests, and learn about career opportunities for women in mathematics, engineering, science and technology.

Attendees will participate in four sessions, including two hands-on workshops, a career panel, and a keynote speech by UMR graduate Linda Wright, senior advisor of planning coordination for ExxonMobil Chemical Co.

Annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference a huge success

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

ATK Space Systems hopes over 550 girls were inspired to pursue careers in math and science after attending the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) conference November 1.

The seventh annual Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics conference, organized by Launch Systems and held at Mt. Ogden Middle School, had girls in grades six through nine talking about math and science. The conference goal is to get young women excited about and interested in science and technical careers, where the majority of these jobs are filled by men. The 27 varied hands-on workshop activities gave participants an idea of what working in those careers might be like.

Middle school girls learn technology can be fun

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

What do you get when you introduce 300 middle school-aged girls to skulls, worms and dirt? A lot of noise, a lot of giggling and a lot of fun.

The girls visited Sacramento State for a day of hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities Saturday, Oct. 6 as the campus hosted an Expanding Your Horizons conference.

“Today was a lot of fun,” says Yesmin Abduljulil. “I got to see how climate changes and how energy is used, and I got to meet new people.”

The students attended workshops that examined how the human heart works, how bones are identified, how rocks are formed, what germs look like under a microscope and the biology behind carnivorous plants. They also learned how lasers work, how crime scene investigations are carried out and how to make a flashlight.
